What is a Residential Care Facility?

Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE), also known as board and care, family homes, or care homes provide a loving and nurturing environment to older adults in a private home setting.

These facilities provide services to persons 60 years of age and over and persons under 60 with compatible needs; caregivers live in the home with the residents. They provide care, supervision and assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing and grooming. Because of the wide range of services offered by RCFEs, consumers should look closely at the programs of each facility to see if the services will meet their needs.

There are hundreds of homes available and family members are often overwhelmed by the task of choosing which homes best meets their needs. Family members also have concerns about measuring the quality of care and services provided. However, once a move occurs it is common for family members to feel completely at ease with the care and support that are provided.

Homes are licensed by the state of California and are required to follow state regulations.
